Harlow was born Chantelle Brown-Young in Toronto, Canada, on July 27, 1994. She developed vitiligo when she was four, and has spoken candidly about being bullied as a child (one venomous group of girls made “moo” noises at her). She moved schools and has said she contemplated suicide. She left school at 16, and friends urged her to try modelling. So she started sharing pictures of herself on Instagram, which were duly spotted by maestro modelmaker Tyra Banks, who drafted Harlow into the 21st season of America’s Next Top Model in 2014. She was eliminated but by that point the juggernaut was rolling. Harlow started picking up shoots, shows and a campaign for Diesel, shot by fashion photographer Nick Knight. Harlow credits Knight as her fashion fairygodparent: after that, she started scoring covers.
